Awareness Session on International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, and Child Rights for IDPs
Awareness Session on International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, and Child Rights for IDPs
Start Date : 02 Mei 2026
Status : Ongoing
The organization “Voice of Peace”, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and in coordination with HOPE, conducted an awareness-raising session on international humanitarian law, human rights, and child rights targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in gathering points for the displaced.
This session was designed as part of ongoing community outreach efforts aimed at strengthening awareness and promoting a culture of rights among vulnerable populations, particularly in displacement settings where access to legal knowledge and protection services is often limited.
The activity focused on introducing participants to the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law (IHL), including the protection of civilians during conflicts and the responsibilities of different actors in ensuring safety and dignity. In parallel, the session addressed core human rights concepts, emphasizing equality, non-discrimination, dignity, and the right to protection for all individuals regardless of their status.
A key component of the session was dedicated to child rights, where participants were guided through essential rights such as the right to protection, education, healthcare, and a safe environment. Practical examples relevant to camp settings were used to help participants better understand how these rights apply in their daily lives and how violations can be identified and reported.
The session also highlighted women’s rights and protection concerns, including exposure to risks such as gender based violence, and the importance of community level awareness in preventing abuse and exploitation. Facilitators encouraged open discussion, allowing participants, especially women, to share experiences, ask questions, and engage actively with the topics presented.
Delivered in an accessible and participatory manner, the session aimed to empower IDP communities with knowledge, enabling them to recognize protection risks, understand their rights, and seek appropriate support when needed. It also contributed to building stronger links between communities and protection actors, enhancing early reporting and response mechanisms.
Overall, this awareness session represents a critical step toward enhancing community resilience, promoting rights-based approaches, and fostering safer environments within IDP gathering points, in line with broader humanitarian protection objectives supported by UNHCR.
