Community Awareness Session on Human, Child, and Women’s Rights in IDP Gatherings
Start Date : 02 Mei 2026
Status : Ongoing
The organization “Voice of Peace”, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and in coordination with HOPE, conducted an awareness-raising session in IDP gatherings in West Darfur State, targeting displaced communities affected by ongoing humanitarian conditions.
The session focused on human rights, child rights, and women’s rights, aiming to enhance awareness among internally displaced persons about their fundamental rights and the importance of protection in crisis settings. It was implemented as part of broader community outreach efforts to strengthen protection awareness and promote dignity and safety within displacement environments.
During the session, participants were introduced to the basic principles of human rights, including equality, non-discrimination, and the right to protection and dignity. Facilitators emphasized that all individuals, regardless of their status, are entitled to these rights, even in emergency and displacement contexts.
A key component of the session addressed child rights, highlighting essential protections such as the right to education, healthcare, safety, and protection from exploitation, abuse, and neglect. Practical examples relevant to camp life were used to help participants understand how to recognize violations and seek appropriate support.
The session also covered women’s rights, with particular attention to the risks faced by women and girls in displacement settings, including exposure to gender-based violence. Discussions emphasized the importance of community awareness, prevention strategies, and the role of both men and women in creating safer environments.
The activity was delivered using a participatory and community-based approach, encouraging dialogue, questions, and experience-sharing among participants, including women and children. This approach helped ensure that the information was accessible, culturally relevant, and directly applicable to the participants’ daily realities.
Supported by UNHCR, the session contributes to strengthening community resilience, protection awareness, and early reporting mechanisms, ultimately aiming to reduce risks and enhance the safety and well-being of displaced populations in West Darfur.
